Finding the Missed Canals Behind Her Pain

Sarah visited Irvine Endodontics with a painful, previously treated molar that had recently developed an abscess. Although the tooth already had a root canal performed by another dentist, she continued to feel pressure and discomfort.

A detailed CBCT scan provided the answer: three canals had been filled during the conventional treatment, but the tooth actually had four canals. The one untreated canal remained infected and was the source of her ongoing pain.

Using high magnification under the operating microscope, Dr. D. located the missed canal and performed a precise, thorough retreatment. All four canals were cleaned, shaped, and disinfected—ensuring complete removal of the infection.

Within days, Sarah’s chewing pain subsided, and the abscess began to resolve. Her tooth was saved—thanks to the diagnostic accuracy of CBCT imaging and the precision of microscope-guided endodontics.
